Almost a decade back, Google had designed a toolset 'Google Webmasters Tool' for webmasters, publishers and businesses. Since its launch, the tool consistently helped millions of the website owners in managing their website successfully. Now, after almost ten years, Google has renamed Google Webmaster Tools to 'Google Search Console' stating valid reasons.
In its blog post Google said that the WMT now is not limited to webmasters only but widely used by hobbyists, small SEO business owners, SEO experts, marketers, programmers, designers, app developers, and, of course, webmasters as well. So they decided not to limit the reach by continuing that name.
See what Google's John Mueller writes in his Google+ post:
"I remember ... back when Google Webmaster Tools first launched as a way of submitting sitemap files. It's had an awesome run, the teams have brought it a long way over the years. It turns out that the traditional idea of the “webmaster” reflects only some of you. We have all kinds of Webmaster Tools fans: hobbyists, small business owners, SEO experts, marketers, programmers, designers, app developers, and, of course, webmasters as well. So, to make sure that our product includes everyone who cares about Search, we've decided to rebrand Google Webmaster Tools as Google Search Console."
Users frequently escalated the issue with Google that webmasters are just one segment of user base. They also made a short URL named https://g.co/SearchConsole but the end point URL still goes to google.com/webmasters.
