  1. Ensure that the website is passing W3C Validation.
  2. URL naming of the web pages for search engines with keyword in them.
  3. Page Title are very important make sure you have your keywords there.
  4. robots.txt should be in place to ensure that the search engines crawl your website.
  5. Google and yahoo sitemap creation and submissions.
  6. Have unique Meta tags for each page of the website.
  7. Relevant site copy to page title
  8. Site navigational structure should have your keywords in the anchor text.
  9. Image and href tags (alt and title) should be used

So if you have the basic in place and you follow the rules mentioned above i am sure you are on the way to the top of the search engine.
